Domrémy is the birthplace of St. Joan of Arc. The house in which she was born is preserved (today it is part of a museum) as is the church with the font, from the time of St. Joan. Because St. Joan was canonized and became the patron Saint of France, Domrémy is now an important place of pilgrimage.

Behind the village, in the place where Joan heard her 'voices', the beautiful Bois-Chenu basilica was built in 1881.

The Church of Joan of Arc's Baptism

This Church, in which Joan was baptized, has undergone some transformations in the course of the centuries. Foremost among these is its change in orientation in 1824: the new choir is situated at the location of the original portal; the former choir was located on the threshold of the present-day portal. The vaults were rearranged as the dates of the vaults' key-stones indicate: in 1582; 1698; 1904. The façade windows (previously walled-up) were not discovered until 1956, the one on the right having kept its mullion and it's flowered tympanum. The semi-cylindrical turret (at the right on the outside of the church) gives access to the tower; the latter /the turret) appears to date from the XIII century. The stoup (to the right of the entrance) dates from the XIII century; it is of rough limestone, polished by the hands of the faithful... Behind the pillar, there is a fresco of Saint Sebastian dated 1586. Next to it's a statue of Saint Margaret, in front of which Saint Joan would come to pray. (Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine appeared to Joan). In the south (left-hand) transept, there is the baptismal font, a block of octagonal limestone upon which Joan was baptised (in 1412). On the wall you can see an ornate tombstone with the coat-of-arms of Thiesselin brothers, descendants of one of Joan's godmothers. Close by, a statue of Saint Remy, from the XVII century. At the entrance of the Choir, you will find two retable altars from the end of the XVI century. Let us not fail to notice the angels at the top of the Holy Virgin Mary's altar, who hold Joan of Arc's coat of arms. To your right, a statue of Saint Anne the same period. To the left of the altar of St Nicholas (patron Saint of the Lorraine), there is a polychrome statue from 1709 portraying Saint Elophe, a deacon martyred in 362 a few kilometres from Domremy. The stained-glass windows: Created by Gaudin in 1955, they depict the major events in the life of our Holy Heroine, except for the central window, which is by St Rémy (496), patron saint of this church, and which portrays the baptism of Clovis. On the left of the central stained-glass window: the apparition of Saint Michael; on the right, Our Lady of Bermont, before which Joan often prayed (see the statue in the Basilica's crypt). To the right, starting from the entrance: Vaucouleurs, then Chinon. On the other Side, starting from the choir: Orléans, followed by Reims. At the right-hand transept: the trial in Rouen; opposite, the stake, which recalls the passion of Joan (1431). The "last breath": As you enter on the left, note the 'last breath', created in Carrara marble by the sculptor Réan del Sarte, whereby Joan's head is crowned with a wreath of thorns and lilies. The pedestal, in onyx, contains earth from the pyre in Rouen. Link to Domrémy; www.domremy.org
